Synopsis

The interview - if it is taken as the fundamental axis of the polygraph examination - allows the collection of data that leads to the elimination of previously identified information gaps. The post-test interview sometimes has positive results and sometimes it is uncomfortable for the examinee, since the reasons for this new encounter must be clarified with him/her. It is in this sense that we propose here a guide for obtaining information after the polygraphic interview. A qualitative research is proposed in three phases: in the first, concepts that support the characteristics of the post-interview are documented; in the second, opportunities for improvement are identified; and in the third, a guide for the improvement of information gathering in the post-interview is proposed. The research highlights that the polygraph activity, although focused on determining technical accuracy, sometimes requires clarifications that allow the evaluated person to clarify questions that may have affected his
or her response. The proposed guide comprises a series of steps and characteristics: getting to know the examinee, introduction, addressing evaluation issues, handling refusals, overcoming objections, handling the passive mode, presenting alternative questions, detailing the offense, and gathering essential elements of information. Closure focuses on respect for human rights and the possibility of a new appointment if necessary.
